Neonatologists adopted three broad methods (1) ‘recommendations’, in which one strategy is presented and explicitly supported since the most useful course of action, (2) a ‘single-option choice’ format (conditional referring to a choice that needs to be made, but without specifying or listing options), and (3) choices (where in actuality the physician clearly relates to or lists options). Our conversation analysis-informed coding plan was based on the possibilities designed for parents to inquire of questions and assert their choice with just minimal interactional constraint or pressure for a certain type of response.
